6 Home Remedies For Swollen Lips

If the swelling on your lips is due to a cut or allergic reaction, you should consult your doctor and follow their instructions.

Having swollen lips is something that can happen to all of us at some point. Generally, this can occur due to dryness in the area, the consumption of a very salty food, a blow, an insect bite or simply the change in temperature.

When its cause is not an allergic reaction or a serious issue that requires medical attention, we can occasionally turn to some home remedies for relief.

Home remedies for swollen lips

According to popular wisdom, the following remedies may help relieve swelling. Their properties are not scientifically proven, but still, there are those who use them.

1. Turmeric powder

Turmeric is said to have antiseptic and healing properties. Therefore, if you have an open wound on your lip, applying turmeric would be a good option, as it would help prevent infections.

In a glass container, make an ointment with a mixture of water, turmeric powder, and fuller’s earth to relieve swelling.

Turmeric powder helps you heal puffy lips

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder (15 g).
  • 1 teaspoon of fuller’s earth (7 g).
  • 3 tablespoons of water (45 ml).

Process

  • In a small bowl mix the turmeric powder with the earth and then add 3 tablespoons of cold water and stir until it forms a paste.
  • Apply the mixture to the affected area and let it dry. Then remove it with warm water.
  • You can apply it 2 times a day until the swelling disappears.

2. Aloe vera

Aloe vera is like a plant widely used in cosmetics and skin care. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a good natural alternative to cure puffy lips.

Process

  • Peel and wash the stalk well to remove the yellowish discharge.
  • Once the gel is extracted from the plant, rub it on the affected area until it is well absorbed.
  • Repeat the procedure 2 or 3 times a day.

3. Coconut or olive oil

Both coconut and olive oil are good options to apply to dry, swollen lips. Thus, the cocoa bar that we can find in kiosks, supermarkets and various stores will not be the only ally.

Note : apply a little oil every time you feel discomfort or just want to hydrate your lips. A couple of drops will do. 

4. Black tea bags

Black tea contains tannins that give it astringent and anti-inflammatory properties that can provide relief from swollen lips.

Ingredients

  • 1 bag of black tea.
  • 1 cup of water (250 ml).

Process

  • Take a pot and add a cup of water, put it on the fire until it is warm.
  • Soak the black tea bag in the water and let it steep for about 10 minutes.
  • When it is cold or has a bearable heat that does not burn you, place the bag on your lip and leave it there for 10 minutes. You can repeat the procedure 3 or 4 times a day.

5. Honey

Honey is also an excellent natural source of hydration that will help reduce lip swelling.

Process

  • Take a tablespoon of honey.
  • Dip a sterile cotton swab or gauze into the honey and gently rub it over your lips.
  • Leave on for a few minutes and rinse.

6. Dark chocolate

Like black tea, dark chocolate has flavonoids and is therefore said to have anti-inflammatory properties that can help provide relief from puffy lips.

Process

  • Take a piece of dark chocolate. Preferably without sugar and with a cocoa percentage greater than 50%.
  • Place the chocolate on a large spoon and heat it over low heat for a few minutes until it melts.
  • Turn off the heat, blow the melted chocolate a little and carefully apply it to your lips.
  • Leave it on for a while and then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat the procedure several times a day.
