Is It Good Or Bad To Wear A Bra?
Although the use of the bra will be determined by the size of the breasts, the truth is that we should not abuse this garment, to also allow the chest to relax
Undoubtedly, this question generates controversy. On the one hand, there are those who defend the use of the swashbuckling bra . On the other hand, those who say that you only have to wear it at certain times of the day and, finally, those who say that this feminine garment does not work, quite the opposite.
In this article we will tell you more about the question of whether it is good or bad to wear a bra.
Study on the effects of the bra on the breasts
Jean Denis Rouillon, a physician from the University of Franche-Comté, has been studying the effects of bras on women for years. His research is based on analyzing, observing and measuring the breasts of the volunteers, as well as allowing each one to tell about their experience wearing the bra or not.
Some of them have agreed to remove their bra in certain situations, for example to play sports, while others have agreed never to wear it.
According to the first conclusions, when this intimate garment is not worn, the nipples rise an average of 7 mm per year. The reason? The breasts are strengthened.
For several of the project volunteers, doing sports without a bra is not a problem, as well as going to work, being at home or attending a party. Their breasts do not hurt at the end of the day, nor do they feel pressure or discomfort during the day.
The only “bad” thing to stand out is the reaction of the people around you, who look at you strangely or tell you to wear a bra. In any case to avoid unfortunate looks or comments they choose to wear a model without rods.
The truth is that this study could leave out a large part of the female population: those over 30, with large breasts, overweight or who have been mothers.
Everything can then change if these requirements are met. For example, during pregnancy the breasts grow and the mammary glands move downward. In that case, it would be good to use a bra.
Myths and truths about wearing a bra
Although we may think that women have always worn bras that is not true. It is practically a modern invention based on fashion.
Some of the myths and realities that revolve around the use of a bra are:
“Wearing a bra is necessary”
Again we have to quote Professor Rouillon to answer this idea. According to this professional, the bra could cause stretch marks, sagging and loss of firmness in the breasts.
Therefore, they are a “false necessity”.
“They are essential to fight against the law of gravity”
We don’t know what Isaac Newton would say about it, but most women believe that wearing a bra helps prevent or reduce breasts from sagging.
Although this seems to be a feminine law, the truth is that the garment limits the growth of the tissues that support the breasts. Therefore, it would not present an anatomical or physiological benefit.
“The models with rods are better”
It is true that they frame the breasts in a different way and they are very elegant. However, they also have their contraindications.
Overuse of bras with metal underwire or underwire causes both internal and external injuries or wounds. It should be noted that the relationship of wearing a bra with an increased risk of breast cancer has been denied.
“The bra is also worn at night”
Some women do not remove their bra when they go to sleep for fear of the law of gravity or because they believe that wearing it will make them feel more comfortable lying on their stomach. The first is a myth and the second has to do with beliefs or habits.
According to the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons , microscopic ligaments hold the breasts in place.
When they are “used” to someone else doing the work for them (ie the bra) they weaken and sagging is more likely to appear in the area.
“The bigger the breasts, the tighter the straps”
Beyond taking into account the fit, it would be best to buy a model whose straps are consistent with the size and weight of the bust. If you have large breasts, the straps must be wider (and vice versa in women with small breasts).
You also have to know that the more “tension” there is in the strips, the more reverse work the ligaments do.
Therefore, when we remove the bra, the breasts will drop more than usual, as if it were an elastic that comes loose after being tensioned for hours.
“The bra is necessary when doing sports and in pregnancy”
That is totally true, since in those moments the breasts either make different efforts and movements or they grow more than usual. Of course, in each case a special model must be used.
You must remember to remove it at night or after exercise, due to sweating.
Other circumstances that lead to needing the bra more are:
- Overweight.
- Large breasts in proportion to the body.
- Women who are breastfeeding or have gone through menopause.
Finally, the number of hours that the bra should be worn should not exceed 7 or 8. We can wear it when we are at work or away from home and, as soon as we arrive, take it off.
In this way the breasts are relaxed and the risks related to this garment are reduced. And of course not wearing it to sleep!
