Oatmeal to treat physical symptoms of anxiety
According to the “American Depression and Anxiety Society”, many people suffer from anxiety in silence and do not seek professional help. In turn, most of the time this emotional state is temporary and we deal with it well through some change, or by approaching things in another way.
However, the risk begins when a temporary state of anxiety lasts over time and becomes chronic. Our health suffers very clearly, almost always starting with the typical hypertension, tachycardia, dizziness … It is something dangerous.
Whether we are taking medication or if we have decided to rethink our day to day putting into practice psychological strategies to control anxiety, as explained by the Mayo Clinic (Minnesota, United States), consuming carbohydrates from whole grains can help us also to reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety.
- The carbohydrates present in oats help us increase the levels of serotonin (a neurochemical) in the brain.
- What serotonin does is produce a calming effect on the brain and body to relieve feelings of anxiety, nervousness, and even insomnia.
- We must avoid simple refined carbohydrates, such as those present in sliced white bread, white sugar, white rice (whole wheat will always be better to combat anxiety). What these foods do is stay in the form of sugar in the blood, offer a momentary energy and leave us hungry.
- Thanks to the dietary fiber present in oats, we will be able to offer our body a constant energy level, thanks to its slow absorption.
- In turn, oats also stabilize blood sugar levels. There are no ups or downs, which offers an adequate balance to our body.
- Oatmeal regulates our nervous system by secreting adequate levels of serotonin into the brain, making it ideal to avoid mood swings and, in turn, relax.
- It is important that the oats we consume are totally organic, natural and not enriched with sugar. Otherwise, we will lose all your benefits. You can buy organic oatmeal in natural stores and, although its price is a little higher, it is worth the investment.
